SUMMARY: Marco Loristan and his father, Stefan Loristan move from one country to the other. Stefan tells Marco that it’s because they love their country, Samavia. They arrive in a poor part of London where Marco meets a gang of small boys who are commanded by one of them, who refers to himself as The Rat. The Rat is crippled and incredibly intelligent. His father has a serious drinking problem and eventually dies. When that happens Marco and the Rat are already good friends and Stefan agrees to take The Rat in with them. They all love Samavia which is in war at the time and Marco and The Rat make a plan to save it. They are certain that if they could find the lost prince everything would be ok again. The legend of the lost prince is a legend, often spoken of because the prince, lost five hundred years ago, was never found. Marco and The Rat develop a theory about the descendant of the lost prince being alive. So they make a plan which I’ve mentioned earlier, to warn friendly people around the world so they’d help the lost prince become the king again. Stefan agrees and they go on a long journey around Europe to give the signal to the prince’s supporters. They finish their task and head home to find Stefan gone to Samavia to help the prince become the king. About a week later a carriage is sent for them to take them there and Marco learns that his father is actually the lost price, now king.
CHARACTERS: Marco Loristan: very friendly, has control over himself, very disciplined and prepared to do pretty much anything for his father. Even though he turns out to be the prince he never looks down on anyone.
The Rat: crippled and without a father. He has a great imagination and is very smart. He respects Stefan deeply and admires him a lot. He’s willing to die for Marco or his father.
Stefan Loristan: Marco’s father, looks just like his son and is very calm. People respect him without knowing he’s the lost prince.
Lazarus: Stefan’s servant, very loyal and helpful.
OPINION: I liked this book very much and I think the fact that it’s old only makes it more interesting. I really liked Marco because he’s so clever and he thinks like an adult. I liked the descriptions of the places where Marco and The Rat where. The only thing wrong with it is that it’s quite predictable.
