UP ON CLOUD NINE by ANNE FINE
REVIEW:
Up on Cloud Nine is a book about a boy and his best friend Stoli who ends up in a hospital after trying to commit a suicide and failing. The story consists of the real life and flashbacks by Stoli’s best friend, Ian. He reminisces about Stoli’s life that has been, well, extraordinary. The boys have been best friends since their childhood. Stoli’s parents were never around so he practically grew up at Ian’s. He has a great imagination and he enjoys telling scary stories. He also likes thinking about death but not because he’s depressed. It’s because his mind works very differently from everyone else’s. He also likes writing. There was a time when he wrote a diary about their vacation at the beach and accidentally left it there. The things in the diary weren’t very nice and those people never invited him to have another vacation there.
CHARACTERS:
Ian: he’s the narrator of the story. He was adopted when he was a baby but he’s not really curious about his biological parents. He’s a very normal guy.
Stoli: his real name is Stuart Terrence Oliver but nobody calls him that. He talks about anything that’s on his mind and he doesn’t know how to tie his shoelaces.
Stoli’s father: he’s a very important lawyer and is always very serious. He works all the time.
Stoli’s mother: she designs clothes and she loves fashion. She’s also a terrible mother.
Ian’s mother and father: they are both pretty ordinary. They are sometimes funny and they’re good parents.
OPINION:
I read this a while ago but I recently started reading it again and it surprised me how funny it is. It talks about some serious topics but in a funny way. It’s very good and interesting. I love how Stoli is something special and has never tried to be someone else. He also thinks a lot and the whole book can make you think and laugh at the same time. I would recommend it to anyone older than ten years old.
